Our house was built in 1965 when our neighborhood was just cheap land. Our plot was bought by a young, newly-graduated architect and our home was his first project.

We fell in love with it instantly. It was the only original home in our area that was on the market and was also modern, and in our view - a total gem. Many older homes were being bought and torn down to make way for 6,000 square foot homes. Our house was often referred to as a tear down because of its comparably smaller 2,800 square feet. It was our dream home, our forever home, our “we can’t wait to remodel this thing and have a family” home. We purchased it in 2013, just before the birth of our first child and also before the birth of Hurricane Harvey.

The day Hurricane Harvey ended, we celebrated that our home made it since it is 4’ above the flood plane. 24 hours later, we heard the city had to open the reservoir and we watched over Nest cam as our home, our cars and everything we owned was submerged in water and slithered around by snakes. Then came the tears, the homelessness, the traveling around and living out of boxes.

Now here we are, one year post Harvey and knee deep in a remodel. We are excited about it now! Today they are going in to begin painting.

The pictures I’m sharing are of the home’s listing when we purchased it, our home in the flood, our home torn apart and 3-D model shots Our Home 2.0. Our home will have concrete-look porcelain floors. I’m an artist and I’ll be creating the artwork.
