Nestled amid the mountain in Lake Arrowhead, California, this 1968 A-frame cabin offered the ultimate canvas for a modern transformation that would honor its retro roots.

For interior designer, Emily LaMarque, the vision was clear: to infuse the cabin with contemporary functionality, details, and amenities while preserving its original architectural charm. The 1,680-square-foot home with expansive entertaining decks required a series of strategic updates while maintaining its connection to the surrounding forest landscape throughout the seasons.

LaMarque took a meticulous approach when it came to selecting materials and design elements that would strike the perfect balance between nostalgia and modernity. Working with contract Justin Frank throughout the project, LaMarque had all original wood ceilings rejuvenated through walnut blasting, breathing new life into the space. Strategic placement of new windows and doors not only welcomed natural light, but also bolstered insulation for cozy winter retreats.

Luxury vinyl tile flooring was chosen for its durability, capable of withstanding kids, pets, and the rigors of outdoor activities. New lighting fixtures were added to each room, while playful tile and wallpaper selections from Hygge & West and Scalamandre injected personality without compromising sophistication.

Redesigning the small kitchen posed a significant challenge, demanding creativity to maintain an open and airy ambiance. LaMarque selected compact appliances to maximize counter and storage space, while open shelves replaced upper cabinets to prevent the space from feeling cramped. Angular picket tile runs from counter to ceiling, created a seamless and easy-to-clean backsplash.

Expanding the lower-level bathroom required ingenuity to ensure functionality and spaciousness. By repurposing space from the existing laundry area, a full-size walk-in shower was integrated, enhancing both comfort and aesthetics.

Despite budget constraints, LaMarque was focused on materials that ensured a harmonious blend of modernity and affordability. Fixtures and finishes were chosen with care, allowing the majority of the budget to be allocated towards essential updates, such as rebuilding decks, replacing windows and doors, and enhancing kitchen and bathroom functionality.

Working with an A-frame structure presented unique challenges, particularly concerning roofing, electrical, and HVAC systems. The distinctive ceiling configuration posed hurdles for furniture layout and placement, requiring thoughtful consideration on each level of the home.

One common pitfall when renovating older homes is overlooking essential mechanical systems and infrastructure. This project celebrated the restoration of original elements, such as the wood ceilings, while updating unseen yet crucial systems for longevity and comfort.

The main floor’s living room is tailor-made for gatherings large and small. Enveloped by original wood ceilings and the distinctive A-frame volume, the room offers a seamless blend of spaciousness and coziness. With large windows framing views of the surrounding forest, it serves as a perfect spot for relaxation and quality time with loved ones.

In revitalizing this vintage A-frame cabin, LaMarque not only preserved its historical essence but also infused it with modern comfort and style, ensuring it remains a timeless retreat for generations to come.
