When Peter and Hinda Drotch tapped Susan Hayward Interiors to remodel their contemporary townhome in Southborough, MA, the design team sought to create a space as welcoming and comfortable as the home the couple had lived in for years, with an elevated, artful sensibility. Originally built in 2000, the three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom, 3,000-square-foot home is the second residence Susan Hayward Interiors has designed for the couple, after having worked with them on their previous home. After a year-long remodel, which took place in the midst of the pandemic, Susan Hayward Interiors achieved a classic home with contemporary and artistic influences through the renovation of the living room, dining room, and bathroom.

Upon entering the living room, the eye is immediately drawn upwards to the striking artwork by Michael Gard above the mantle, deliberately lit to underscore the fixture as the room's focal point. The sculptural piece is composed of delicate dancers that seem to float in the frame, their weightlessness juxtaposed by the substantial metallic artwork placed just above the dancers’ stage. The unique and elegant ballerina wire sculpture was a must-have from Peter and Hinda’s previous home, for which Susan Hayward Interiors created a custom stage above the fireplace, where a television would traditionally be placed. Angular windows flank the fireplace, contributing to the warm and inviting feel by allowing substantial natural light into the space. An expansive rug ties together the various red accents throughout the room and creates a dramatic backdrop for the couple’s unique coffee table. Peter and Hinda’s couch is mirrored by the gorgeous Global Views sideboard, further incorporating black and red details to the overarching motif.

Through an entryway connected to the living room lays a clean and casual dining area that is perfectly situated for dual-room entertaining. Expansive windows cover the far wall, flooding the room with light and inviting guests into the calm and clean dining area. Susan Hayward Interiors was challenged to select furnishings that fit the ovular room and to create a gathering space for Peter and Hinda’s future guests. To solve this, Susan Hayward Interiors selected curved furniture, perfectly reflecting the natural flow of the space. A circular Arhaus table and chairs perfectly suit the needs of the couple and the room, providing them with the option to expand and contract as needed. The delicate chandelier reinforces the casual but elegant atmosphere, casting a subtle halo of light onto the space.

In the master bathroom, Susan Hayward Interiors drew inspiration from the spa-like aesthetic of the master bathroom they had renovated in Peter and Hinda’s previous home. Clean lines and a neutral color palette characterize the room, creating a calming environment for the couple to unwind and pamper themselves. The vast double vanity provides ample room for both Peter and Hinda to utilize the space, with extensive storage in the Metropolitan cabinets below. The expertly designed bathroom includes Peter and Hinda’s preferences from their previous home, creating a zen and welcoming space that immediately made them feel at home and relaxed.
