The pandemic has made us rethink our living spaces like never before. On average, we spend over 90% of our time indoors, of which over 68% of that is spent inside our homes. It's no wonder many of us are seeking areas of refuge in our homes to help us escape the traps of everyday monotony while also seeking ways to redesign the experience to foster better health & well-being.
My family was no different. We were desperate to find a secluded area in our home that could serve as a cozy sanctuary blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors ... a dedicated space to unwind, reflect and enhance our mental well-being.
In collaboration with The Well Home (a bespoke luxury interior wellness design firm), we designed a unique addition to our home resembling the look and feel of a rustic cabin tucked away into the serene wilderness of the Teton Mountain Range - a place we frequent as a family.
We custom-milled wood from a 100-year-old Amish barn deconstructed in Pennsylvania to give it a warm, rustic, cabin-like feel resembling the authentic barns out West. We gable-pitched the roof to give it a spacious feel and added a stone gas fireplace to amplify the warmth year-round.
The entire cabin is insulated to allow 4 season utilization of the space and is accompanied by two sets of accordion glass wall doors to allow free movement between the indoors and outdoors. We added a 650 sf open deck with cable wiring and accent post lighting to enhance the nature views of the 2-acre backyard.
No detail was overlooked - including the selection & placement of the individual wood boards, the design of the integrated surround sound acoustics, the layout positioning for optimal sun exposure, the fluid arrangement of circadian lighting, the durability of indoor/outdoor porcelain floors for multi-use entertaining, the inclusion of extra-wide accordion glass door panels to maximize nature views, and more.
It's beyond what we ever imagined and has become a treasured wellness sanctuary for our entire family (and even our friends).
