You Have to See the Before Shot of This Refined, Minimal Kitchen

A sleek cook space emerges from a standard-issue kitchen.

The kitchen in Shane Carslake's Corktown townhouse was modern, but with lime-green cabinets, a tile floor, and inefficient layout, it didn't fit his needs. A real estate agent by trade, Carslake knew a renovation would pay off in spades. “Changing the kitchen enhanced the feeling of my entire home and made it an even more pleasurable place to hang out," he says. "bulthaup was an investment, however, I’m confident it will pay off if I decide to sell.”

"Shane enjoys both cooking and entertaining so we maximized the counter space to make meal prep and hosting easy," Priftaj says. "It was also very important that the kitchen include a gas grill so he could quickly and conveniently grill without having to climb up five flights of stairs to use the bbq on the patio." Priftaj selected high-gloss acrylic white cabinets from bulthaup's b3 line with an aluminum backsplash and b3 prism drawer system to keep things tidy. A Wolf hood and gas cooktop with chargrill give Carslake the flexibility he desired for indoor grilling. The counters are polished white quartz.

"Shane wanted the largest fridge possible," Priftaj saus. "With this in mind, we selected the fully integrated Sub-Zero fridge and housed it in the tall oak wall unit to provide him with the maximum storage while keeping the space uncluttered." The ovens, microwave, and coffee machine are all housed within the unit and placed at an ergonimically optimized height.

"We transitioned the kitchen to a galley plan to increase storage and preparation space, to reduce the need for overhead cabinetry, and to elongate sight lines," Priftaj says. "There’s now a space where several people can perch or help out without tripping over one another."

While the visual transformation is indeed a striking one, it's the funcionality that makes the biggest difference. "A well designed kitchen, made with quality materials and superb craftsmanship, offers daily pleasure and and long-lasting value," Priftaj says.
