“Living in a climate that experiences the highest of high temps and lowest of low temps, quality windows are so important,” says Heather. “We love that our home feels cozy all year long and the bright sun that shines inside year round, which makes us all happier people.”

While the facade favors privacy, clear cedar was used on the entryway to create a warmer welcome.

The exterior features natural slate cladding and massive floor-to-ceiling Marvin windows on the east side to take advantage of the home’s views of the rolling terrain. The tongue-and-groove clear cedar accents are used between the windows to make them a single mass and “warm up and bring some accents to the house,” says Nate.

The sprawling 5,200-square-foot residence by The Up Studio is sited in a fairly secluded and densely-wooded area of Old Westbury, New York, surrounded by mature oak and maple trees. The home’s front facade—with undulating gables and long, winding entry—is undeniably cinematic. In contrast to the traditionally-influenced front, the rear of the home embraces a more modern design sensibility. Rotated perpendicularly, the L-shaped configuration and wall of windows from Marvin maximizes natural light flowing into the home, and encourages unobstructed sightlines from the interior to the lush landscape outside.

Working with Hobstetter Architecture, the designers knocked down the existing closet-bathroom configuration and absorbed another bathroom to create a more luxurious space.

A Blu Dot table is surrounded by custom made stools by Dan Druley Craftsman. A Dolomite slab, Enigma in 3cm, covers the counters. The overhead light is Roll and Hill Fiddlehead Cantilever.

The interior contrasts the dark exterior with white plaster, allowing natural light to disperse throughout the home.

“There was an art to the renovation. We wanted to bring the house into the 21st century while also paying homage to its history,” says architect Cristina Graff.

The kitchen island responds to the concrete walls and floor, while black pendant lights punctuate the otherwise light palette.

The custom front door provides a peek-a-boo moment for arriving guests. Many of the design moments, including the slotted stair rail, were designed with the Southern exposure in mind.
