The energy efficient design relies on a wood-burning stove for chilly days, otherwise sunlight, and operable windows and doors take care of most of the heating and cooling.

The material palette is simple by design: red brick, polished concrete, and wood.

The house is balanced atop a rocky slope. “Not one millimeter of rock was blasted away,” says Rickard, who deferred to the topography in his design.

Marlaina likens the Bernhard Residence to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, which similarly cantilevers over a wooded area with water.

Scattered about are modern classics like TK furniture and statement pieces like Wurlitzer baby grand by Russell Wright. TK something about 1970s interior.

Rudolph’s design turned the existing living room into a dining area, with a new living room, sitting room, and screened porch in the addition. A custom light fixture designed by Rudolph and fabricated by his lighting company Modulightor hangs above the dining table near the oxidized steel fireplace that’s framed with stones rescued from the dismantled garage.

Wittman calls the couple a Jack and Jill of all trades due to their wide-ranging hobbies. In the workshop, there’s a glass-art studio and woodshop connected by a room for model making and storing collections.

Yang Yeo and his girlfriend Ching Ian relax on the back stoop of their renovated and radically updated Singapore shophouse—an archetypal building type in this busy port city. “Shophouses brought back memories of our childhood,” says Yeo.

Because the house is narrow and long (16 by 68 feet), the design team decided to create a huge open-air space to light the interior naturally. Two retractable motor-driven canvas canopies shelter the space during Singapore’s frequent rains.

The living areas are located on the upper level, where natural light spills inside thanks to expansive glazing which capture captivating views of the greenery below.

Set on a large tree-filled lot, Tirranna offers a restorative retreat to reconnect with nature.

The prefabricated portion of the facade is built using corrugated, heat-treated wood.

Pine and gravel sleepers follow the site’s natural slope, weaving through the existing pine trees until reaching the home’s entrance.
