Window Seats We Love
We wouldn't mind losing ourselves in a book in one of these window seats.
The master bedroom opens up to the sea “like a maw,” says Callahan, who is delighted with the high ceilings and expansive space. Callahan and Hayes’s full-time residence in Fairfield, Connecticut, is a 1734 farmhouse with, as she puts it, “small, dark rooms and very low ceilings.” Rolling drawers under the bed and window seat allow for considerable storage while keeping the room clutter-free. His-and-hers desks flank the window seat in a room one is loath to ever leave.
The pitched-roof main living area, with generous banquette seating continuing around the perimeter. “My 23-year-old daughter has taken groups of university friends up for relaxing weekends,” says O’Sullivan. “And during school holidays I took my son Henry and five of his 16-year-old friends for a week of surfing, fishing, card games and mischief.”
Inside, Storey chose to leave materials unfinished and as natural as possible — matte ceramic bathroom tiles, exposed concrete structural pillars and walls, and white-oak doors and floors. The latter were treated with WOCA, a VOC-free Danish floor oil.
“I left the concrete exposed to add texture — it’s a nice touch, because it’s something you’d normally see in much more high-spec houses,” says Storey.
