Instead of relying on plasterboard that would be too costly, architect Davor Popadich chose to use plywood to line his New Zealand home's interior. The architect placed the windows at Sabrina’s eye level so that she’d be able to see her son, Rocco, playing in the yard outside. "You can feel the seasons changing here," says Chiavelli. "I grew up three miles from here, outside in nature. This is a house for experiencing life."

August Smart Lock Yves Behar, renowned designer of Fuseproject, has dipped his hands in the smart home space with the August Smart Lock. It's an electronic lock that recognizes when you're at the door, thanks to a Bluetooth connection with your phone, and unlocks. You can manage digital keys for friends and family, and track who is entering and leaving your house. “The house’s narrow footprint works for us in terms of maximum exposure to the lake,” says Gibbs (shown here with son Blake and dog Max on the shore of Lake Iosco). Glass walls and doors by Andersen also mean that Gibbs can keep a close eye on Blake when he’s playing in the yard. A plinth of reused bedrock found on the property has become an unintended place for active play.
