Vitra and Carl Hansen & Son Take on Los Angeles with New Showrooms
After nine years at the Helms Bakery design center in Culver City, Vitra has revamped its Los Angeles showroom with a more open, expanded space. The brand's grand re-opening comes at the same time that Carl Hansen & Son opens its new L.A. showroom, right next door.
With the new, enlarged showroom, Vitra can now showcase the kind of live/work environment many companies are moving toward. “There’s been a huge focus on bringing more of the home-like feel into the office,” says Jessica Hicks, Vitra’s new North America president, “because it’s so conducive to doing good work.” The showroom features the brand's softer furniture and lounge seating that coordinate with their work stations.
At the back of the room, the popular Alcove Cabin, designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, stands out in red. One of Vitra’s newer products, Workbay, also designed by the Bouroullec brothers, serves as a coffee and snack bar. It also creates a corridor behind the wall, which displays how the design can easily separate open-floor spaces, creatively. In the foreground, the credenza-style Level 34 piece, designed by Werner Aisslinger, can be used as a decorative storage unit or configured with different sized pieces to build a workstation.
The new Carl Hansen & Son showroom is the perfect next step for this Danish modern furniture company. The floor is only used for showing quality pieces like Hans J. Wegner's classic CH33 chair, so interested Los Angeles buyers now have a place to go and sit with the products not currently on display at local dealers.
