VIDERE LICET - 'MELTFORMS'

On view through January 6 at THE NEW, Videre Licet's Meltforms exhibition consists of a series of glass and metal sculptural lightboxes illuminated with internal LED lights. The exhibition introduces Videre Licet's latest body of work, at the crossover of art and design.

The duo of artist/designer Daniele Albright and design curator Stefan Lawrence began working with glass about a year ago, attracted to its natural beauty and luminous qualities. The Meltforms lightboxes are the result of their initial experimentation with the material and each piece is unique. To create them, different colors of glass are melted in furnaces and poured onto a steel plate, where they are folded into each other while molten and then rolled through a steel mill to flatten them into sheets, creating unique patterns as the glass colors melt and fuse into each other.

The result is visually stunning, and somewhat hypnotic. The Meltforms lightboxes play with luminosity, pattern and color which are all facets of our cognitive process, subconsciously informing how we understand the world, and at times leading us into higher states of mind.

About Videre Licet
Launched in 2014, Videre Licet (Latin for "to be able to see") is a collaboration between artist and designer Daniele Albright and design curator Stefan Lawrence. Based in Los Angeles, they intersect practices of art and design and describe their work as "conceptual glamour," bridging a wide range of California references from minimalist sculpture to Hollywood glamour to '70s experimentalism. Designed using contemporary technologies but crafted entirely by hand, the collection includes functional pieces as well as sculptural works produced in limited editions.

About THE NEW Gallery
Established in 2016, THE NEW presents an innovative exhibition program with an emphasis on works that cross disciplinary boundaries between art and design. The gallery was launched by Stefan Lawrence, founder of Twentieth, one of Los Angeles's premier contemporary design showrooms. Located next door to Twentieth’s landmark Neil Denari designed building, THE NEW presents rotating exhibitions of unique and limited edition fine design and also hosts cultural events related to art, design and architecture.
