When Scott and Angela Damman bought an 1880s hacienda near Mérida, Mexico, in 2011, they thought they’d spend a year with their two kids exploring the culture and learning the language before returning to Colorado. Instead, the family fell in love with rural Mexico, and the couple, looking for a way to stay, built a design business rooted in the fiber production and weaving traditions of the Yucatán.

Khoi describes the split bathroom as the ideal example of the home’s “public/private dichotomy.” A door turns it from a full bath into a powder room.

The bathroom is clad in blue penny tile, and natural light pours in to illuminate it all. “It’s almost a spa-like experience,” says Khoi. The tiles are from Bedrosians.

Johnson had renovated the kitchen in the original 1950s home, which now functions as a separate rental property.

“A lot of renovations today have so much white and gray, and we wanted to run away from that,” says São Paulo native Joyce Prestes. “We really wanted color.”

The basement’s kitchenette was moved to a more central location and updated with contemporary colors and finishes. Custom cabinetry was painted in Benjamin Moore’s Spiced Apple Cider to add some brightness to a space that leans on the dark side. Daltile’s Keystones tile in Artic White was also used on the walls in the nearby bathroom.

The second-level bathroom is adorned with a decadent shade of green tile and wall-and-ceiling paint, linking the space to the lush landscape.

The couple spent $6,765 on Bisazza tile in the bathroom and alley-facing exterior.

The yellow and khaki tiles in this powder room echo the color scheme in the main living area.

Terracotta tiles in the kitchen lend a sense of warmth. The stools are from Blu Dot and the pendant light is Foscarini.
