The Courtyard House
This project is located in a neighbourhood of traditional family homes, and responds to this context by merging elements of vernacular and contemporary design. Set atop a hill, the house is nestled into the ground and the second floor embraces a dormer typology to limit the overall height. Traditional materials like tumbled brick, wood cladding, and cedar shingles are combined with contemporary forms and oversized wood windows to create a hybrid aesthetic.
Taking advantage of a unique triangular site, the house is laid out as a courtyard sheltering the rear terrace and pool area. The large windows visually link the home across this space, and seamlessly integrate interior and exterior living areas. On the interior, freestanding millwork pieces create distinct living spaces within the open concept floor plan, allowing rooms to flow freely from one to another, and further to the exterior courtyard.
