The Beresford Kitchen
The priority for remodeling this neglected mid-century home and kitchen was to keep true to the mid-century modern DNA of the home and reinvigorate the home with windows and door walls to allow in the natural Arizona desert light while also introducing new clean site lines to the patios and remodeled pool area. We transformed this original kitchen in to a light bright and highly functional space for the home chef. The owners are a family of five with as many as five people cooking and prepping in the kitchen at a time. Having a light and bright space with amazing functionality was a high priority. The mixing of Dacor heritage appliances and modernist line appliances from Dacor blended beautifully in the space providing the owners with high function as well as style. We specified the Dacor heritage line for the sleek built in look desired for the refrigerator and dishwasher. The cook top required the sleek lines of the modernist Dacor cook top to integrate seamlessly with the polished quartzite slab selected for the back splash. Whites were chosen to give this kitchen an airy feel with inspiration taken from mid-century modern Eichler homes in California. A warm walnut island was built to spec for the kitchen and chosen as the accent hardwood because of its beauty and historical roots within mid century modern design.
The previous kitchen had been closed in with dropped soffits and after exposing the duct work we were able to open, brighten, and highlight the original ceiling of exposed beams with tongue and groove. The restored high ceiling gave us an opportunity to add a touch of walnut to the top of the perimeter cabinets which provides contrast and warmth to the matte finished euro front cabinets. Brushed bronzed hardware and faucets accent the space subtly while tying in the bronzed burner covers of the Dacor modernist cook top. The clean lines of the island quartzite was specified for its durable functionality as well as simple beauty. The more elaborate quartzite above the cook top with veining was just what was needed for a pop of intrigue to further enhance the beauty and modern aesthetic of this cook’s dream space.
