The stairs connecting the three levels of the house are made of concrete, with iron railing. “The are no white walls in the house; everything is either paneled in pine wood or or converted in a stucco that mimics the look of concrete,” says the architect.

In the living room, an Artek daybed is covered in Helios dark green fabric from Johanna Gullichsen.

The front deck overlooks Tahquitz Rock, an iconic rock formation for many climbers.

Stone elements on the first floor were sourced from the property.

The new staircase displays a glass railing and floating walnut treads.

The designers wrapped the staircase in glass, giving the feature an ethereal quality.

A switchback staircase accommodates a grand piano handed down from Anton’s father.

On the main wall, Lin hung a photograph by Matthew Johnson; under the stairs, a small table by Phaedo. A custom chandelier by In Common With hangs overhead and a side table by Grain Design was added to the first landing.

The living area is anchored by a new stair leading to the second level, which is screened by slats of the same red oak used in the flooring. The side chair was sourced and reupholstered by Seattle-based Madsen Modern.

The oculus reflects a ring of sunlight on the clay plaster wall that partially wraps the staircase.

The last step on the basement level is made from a large block of Amazonite, providing color and interest.

From the lower level, the staircase appears as a giant coil, where sunlight and shadows play thanks to the oculus on the third-level.
