Philippe has an impressive collection of books, but prior to the renovation they were scattered all over. The integrated shelves lining the staircase consolidate his books and create a hybrid stair-storage-shelving system.

Located in the center of Madrid near Plaza España, Gon Architects transformed this dark, cluttered apartment into a sunny, carefully colorful home. The reimagined space is 860 square feet with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

Gus, the family’s Scottish Fold cat, perches on the stair to the kids’ lounge. Painted in Benjamin Moore’s True Blue, it also holds bonus storage for the ADU.

The ADU kitchen is outfitted with a SMEG refrigerator and an LG washer and dryer.

The kitchen and dining space sit on the second level, where expansive windows frame the treetops that populate the adjacent hillside.

The narrow, steel and-wood staircase maximizes space for the rooms.

The stairs connecting the three levels of the house are made of concrete, with iron railing. “The are no white walls in the house; everything is either paneled in pine wood or or converted in a stucco that mimics the look of concrete,” says the architect.

In the living room, an Artek daybed is covered in Helios dark green fabric from Johanna Gullichsen.

The front deck overlooks Tahquitz Rock, an iconic rock formation for many climbers.
