“I studied architecture as an undergrad, and even though I’m in interiors now, that education of not overpopulating spaces, of letting the building be seamless, has always carried through for me,” says Caroline.

For the couple’s shared office, which is windowless, the team installed backlit panels to give the illusion of daylight entering the room.

The kitchen showcases stainless steel counters created by Tyler, a metal fabricator. The greenery from the outdoors pours in through the large windows, creating connection between the interior and the exterior.

Popham Design supplied the tiles in the bathrooms, were Gebhardt chose to incorporate more color.

Allied Maker supplied the trio of sconces above the floating shelves, while the light fixture above the dining table is from Stuff by Andrew Neyer.

Raw Solids Denim Fabric by Kufri Textiles was used to create the custom headboard in the primary bedroom. A wall of white oak tiles the room to the home's theme. The Sierra chairs are from Croft House.

Master bathroom

The rear of the home had been complicated by many additions. Davis streamlined the space as one adjoining kitchen, living room, dining room, and lower sunroom.

The kitchen features its original built-in clock; a Michael Graves Alessi kettle stands on the range.

The north-facing kitchen features new oak millwork and a lime-paint ceiling. Vintage Thonet chairs surround a marble table designed by Margles.

Custom cabinets in a mix of white oak and lacquered paint join Miele appliances and a honed quartz countertop.

Architect Daniel Kaplan of Bowerbird Architects added onto the rear façade to expand the floorspace for the lower apartment, and accommodate a three bedroom, three bath plan, plus a study and finished cellar. By creating a stepped addition, Kaplan made it possible for three floors to have outdoor access. Note how the top right deck is angled to prevent the new structure from blocking sunlight into the neighbors’ windows.

The open-plan kitchen-and-dining space features a Douglas fir ceiling and ceiling beams and polished concrete floors.
