Joan has always admired midcentury design and architecture, so Signal added a slatted fir divider between the dining room and the guest wing, giving nod to the iconic era without straying from the home’s contemporary, Northwest appeal. A trio of George Nelson Bubble lamps follows the aesthetic lead.

Cedar ceilings throughout are a nod to the cedars in the old-growth forest surrounding the house. A window over the sink gives the homeowners a peek-a-boo view to the front of their house, so they can catch glimpses of foliage, even while washing the dishes.

For the living room, Dovetail’s metal shop fabricated a custom fireplace to go between the Quantum windows. The steel surround is coated in an antique black finish to complement the stained cedar wall.

Elena’s bedroom, which is part of the modular unit, has a wall of built-in storage.

The basement living room is smaller and more private, offering a dark space for watching movies as a family. Like the first-floor living room, the television is concealed by a timber screen. The artwork is by Columbian-born, Melbourne-based painter Julian Clavijo.

A simple palette of pine plywood walls and white-washed pine floors give's the cabin a minimalist yet warm feel.
