The window frames are made from aluminum instead of vinyl.

Locally sourced, low-emitting materials were used inside and out. The floors throughout are bamboo.

The vestibule is the entry point, and it also separates the sleeping area of the house from the communal areas.

Glass-and-steel corridors link each of Austin and Lida’s studios to the main pavilion, where they share the kitchen and a central living and dining space.

The hallway leading to the master bedroom is lined with an assortment of framed photos of family and friends and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the verdant James River Valley.

Creekside Residence

With the entry relocated, the original terrace entrance porch was transformed into a garden, and the entry corridor was repurposed as a bathroom.

Globe pendant lighting illuminates the interiors.

The mud room is swathed in the same inky palette as the exterior.

The home opens to views straight through to the backyard.

High ceilings, white walls, and a polished concrete floor create a simple backdrop for the black-and-wood finishes of the kitchen.

A view of the entry from outside. One enters the house from under a pergola of wisteria, and is immediately within a house of light. A large skylight over the wall at the end of the entry serves as both an art wall, and a way of welcoming you with light in a formerly dark area.

Natural light pervades the home, from the stairwell at the center to the living room’s vaulted ceilings, which are seen at the end of the hall.

"The lower level was designed to be open and unobstructed," says Todd. "The foyer is compressed at the entry and opens both vertically and horizontally as you enter the main living space, with natural light pouring in from the dual skylights atop the double-height volume."
