One of the most challenging aspects of the build was incorporating the residents' request for a diverse material palette. The flooring is ash and the cabinetry is Mahogany. Cash Barnes custom fabricated the steel railing as well as the bridge and insect screens.

Tag Front designed a rectangular mahogany table with four ottomans nestling underneath, creating a simple brown block when not in use. When guests arrive, the ottomans slide out and there’s plenty of room for four.  “I like to have people over and entertain,” Mandi says, “so it was important to have a dinner table that doesn’t take up much space.”

The window beside the tub in the master bathroom peers over the living space below and echoes the shiplike quality of the pod, which also contains the master bedroom. Lights reminiscent of portholes and mahogany walls deepen the feeling of being on an ocean cruise.

The nine-by-three-foot mahogany entrance door is meant to evoke the surrounding trees. The iron handrails lining the base of the porch are a subtle architectural detail, as well as a support system to prevent the cabin from ever twisting or shifting “like so many old Texas outbuildings,” says Panton.
