Lifting up the roofline allowed for clerestory windows above the front door and along the front facade of the house, and the new glulam wood beams brought a sense of texture and warmth to the interior.

The living room, dining room, and kitchen are connected via one open artery that runs through the main floor, which makes the place ideal for parties and get-togethers.

The home now has a designated foyer, which Joshi-Gupta color-blocked with Farrow and Ball’s “Green Smoke,” to “create a sense of grounding and scale,” says the interior designer.

The entry is covered with green paint from floor to ceiling.

The underwater pool window not only adds a touch of whimsy, but helps illuminate the basement.

The new foyer is more open and bright, the removed closet and stairway wall allowing the light to fill the rest of the space. The hanging light is by Copenhagen's &Tradition.

Now, the front entry leads to a vestibule with two doors, one which accesses the main floor residence here, and one which leads up a flight of stairs to the second-floor apartment. Once inside the main residence, there is this entry gallery, which has two bedrooms and a bathroom off it, and leads to the open-plan living area.

Past the front door, a screen of white oak divides the foyer from the great room. The storage wall on the right includes a bench and drawers for storing shoes, a wet bar , and a closet hiding the washer and dryer on the far end. The large round mirror is from Crate & Barrel.

One renovation request, homeowner Isaac Hase says, “was having a place to drop your shoes.” At the mudroom end of a run of kitchen cabinets, you’ll find another feature the couple asked for. “We wanted to have a dedicated, visible place for our little stash of cookbooks,” Karoline says.

Austin and Kotono Watanabe flew from vacation back to Minneapolis with the Noguchi lantern from Ozeki, a manufacturer in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan near Kotono’s hometown of Ibigawa, as a carry-on.

Matthew and Holly opened up the foyer and kept the exposed framing in place to speak to the house’s history. The figurine on the newel post is not original to the house, but a vintage replacement found online and rewired by Matthew.

Just off the entry courtyard, and adjacent to the garage, a newly defined mud room features white oak millwork.
