On an agricultural estate in Portugal, Blaanc Studio designed a simple retreat that does its utmost not to interfere with the scenic backdrop. The home was built with rammed earth, which is known for its thermal properties that help maintain a mild temperature all year long. A large, open fireplace with plenty of wood storage is used to warm the living area in winter. The firewood storage's open shelving is carefully located on the side of the island that doesn't face the living room, making sure that it is only visible in certain locations.

The master suite is filled with plentiful views, while taking advantage of the forest of cedars to provide complete privacy year round.

The Stovax freestanding wood fire in the living room is used to heat the home. The concrete floor provides thermal mass, which helps maintain thermal stability.

The use of wood softens the industrial feel of the concrete.

A wood-burning stove from Harvia, of Finland, heats the sauna. The pavilion’s rough-cut pine walls are treated with tar, a preservative that yields a time-worn aesthetic.

Bayley’s ventless fireplace from Spark Modern Fires keeps the house toasty as he reads in his favorite red armchair, a vintage-store find, in his bedroom.

When building their dream retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Steve and Alexi Conine worked with architect Brad Hoyt to create a smart house that fused technology and design. Like the rest of the home, the living-room furnishings blend high design, comfort, and kid-friendliness, including a table by Isamu Noguchi for Herman Miller, a leather sectional sofa from Four Hands, a cashmere cableknit-covered elk mount by Rachel Denny, and a custom, multicolored cowhide patchwork rug by Linie Design.

By focusing on warming tones and woods throughout the home, Rerucha mixed modern and rustic to create a soothing retreat.

The various levels of outdoor terraces create different opportunities for enjoying the lake, from socializing at the water’s edge to private contemplation closer to the house.

The interior furnishings were all chosen by the homeowners to complement the home's modern design and building materials.

"The steel-and-wood beam details in the living room, dining room, and kitchen are a nod to the fact that the big open span facing the water is achieved with a large steel beam up in the ceiling from which all those large wood beams are suspended," notes the firm. The natural materials palette in the interior includes Pioneer Millworks 'Prairie' reclaimed wood siding for the walls, stained clear vertical grain cedar ceilings (main level), and solid end grain hemlock flooring by Oregon Lumber.
