Finding My Unique Kitchen In A Town Of Average

After waiting many years I was finally able to build the kitchen I had long dreamed of. Unfortunately trying to find the 'unique' I personally desired, in a small capital city, was much harder than I ever expected. It seems anything outside the box called 'average' was much to hard to contemplate. After much searching I finally found my 'unique' and will be forever grateful.

After residing in the US and having a kitchen faucet with a seperate pull out spray tap it was definitely a feature I hoped to have. Unfortunately these faucets are not common in Australia and after searching high and low my ever suffering husband was tasked with purchasing one while on a business trip.

The window frame to the right was finished in a Porters Paint Industrial Lustre paint called Nautilus, that created a wonderful contrast with the tiles. The tiles were chosen to add to the industrial look and added a another texture. The tiles large size resulted in less grout and an appearance of an aged brick wall.

The Fenix finish on the dining table complements the raw steel finish of the island bench and creates somewhat of a contrast to the floor. The original kitchen had cork flooring and when this was lifted it revealed the original Tasmanian Oak floorboards. Many of the staples used to secure the cork flooring remained and were hammered flat. It was our intention to tint the floor however due to the remaining staples and some previous water damage we chose to use a Porters Paint stain called Palm Beach Black that provided a very dark finish. The final clear coat resulted in the floor having a charcoal affect that dances with the light.

The kitchen island bench top consists of a 5mm thick piece of raw black steel that has been treated with Penetrol. The five cupboards are made of the same material and contain wired industrial glass. These two features were something that just couldn't be comprehended by kitchen companies in the area. The two island pendants were recycled from an old factory in my home town and had very little work done to them prior to installation.
