Conic Estudi transformed an industrial space into Vasto Gallery: a comfortable home in Poblenou, Barcelona, that doubles as an art gallery. The two programs are separated in the otherwise open plan by a service core detached from walls and ceiling. Built in wood, this central volume stands out as a freestanding element that allows an uninterrupted view of the interior.

The couple’s cat, Pinot, keeps watch on Craig’s desk, which faces the sleeping alcove. A heavy custom curtain from Rose Brand curves around the bed to give sleepers more quiet and privacy.

Craig designed the wood desk with benday–like perforations that disperse the sunlight.

Craig and Thomas infused the surfaces of the space with their bold taste by alternating the orientation of the wood grain in the millwork veneer panels to create a lively pattern.

Now a one-bedroom, it flexes from family home to makerspace with ease.

Depending on how the curtain in the living space is configured, it can shade the windows, hide the desk, fully enclose the seating area, and more. “Fabric allows for more flexibility, so a curtain wall does things that a normal wall can’t do,” Kyle points out.

In 2020, architects Elle Gerdeman and Kyle Coburn purchased a single-bay loft in a former light bulb factory in East Boston.
