Past the front door, a screen of white oak divides the foyer from the great room. The storage wall on the right includes a bench and drawers for storing shoes, a wet bar , and a closet hiding the washer and dryer on the far end. The large round mirror is from Crate & Barrel.

The restored home sits on a tree-filled lot in Brentwood’s Crestwood Hills neighborhood.

The arched doorways throughout the home are all new additions that the couple chose to feel akin to a Spanish-style hacienda.

Now, a generous entranceway draws the eye to the evocative curves of the sculptural spiral staircase, illuminated by abundant daylight thanks to a skylight above.

The house was built near a sometimes-noisy highway, but robust insulation and windows help minimize sound filtration, as does a foyer and hallway fronting the building.

The entryway features a family heirloom in the form of an antique dresser, which sits beneath a West Elm chandelier.

The wall with the circular motif defines the entry and provides separation of the living spaces, but still allows sightlines from the front door to the backyard. It “really sets the tone for the house,” says Blake. And doubles as an excellent play area for the kids to chase each other around, adds Berg: “They can run for a mile and you still see them the whole time.”

“Everything needed to be approachable and simple,” says Hilary. “The house reflects who we are.”

The custom cabinetry extends into a mudroom area, also with BluDot Wook wall hook in black.

The gate, opening onto the entry courtyard, serves as the pavilion's front door.

Montalba’s biggest challenge was making sure that his four-bedroom home didn't look too large from the street.

The Coles and their children love hitting the beach, just four blocks away.

A concrete walkway leads to their home, which is painted in a custom white and gray stucco. The lighting is by Modern Form.

Jay and Melissa embraced the general configuration of the original house, which was a low, broad home that stretches out horizontally. While they remodeled and renovated the two wings on the sides, the blue sections are original. The cedar and stucco elements were new additions.
