Entry/Mudroom/Closets
Sugarhouse Design & Architecture lightened up the entry hall, thanks to interior fluted glass panels, white oak floors with a contrasting walnut inlay, and custom oak closets that reach to the ceiling (after removing the fussy tray feature there). The bench is custom-designed by Sugarhouse and fabricated by Elwood Design Co in Orange, CA, and the ceiling light is by Modern Forms.
Rakesh holds Poppy, 3, while Benedict, 6, and Noor, 14, play nearby. Ria, 11, and Amanda look down from the balcony. A standing seam metal roof and charred cedar cladding help keep the maintenance low. “At one point the house was supposed to be white, like the previous structure and the main house,” says Maceda. “But in the middle of the process, I said: ‘Why don’t we go black and just match the shingles of the old garage, since this house is a different thing?’ ”
