The handblown glass and brass pendant lighting in the hallway is by Douglas & Bec.

Among the home’s many distinctive details are floor-to-ceiling doors, like the one to the master bedroom. The herringbone floor is waxed charred spruce.

The entrance sequence begins with a metal staircase that leads up to the first-floor entrance hall with a coat cupboard and bathroom.

We painted the original iron staircase and added wooded beams throughout the house to balance modern pops of color with older elements, in order to not have the house feel "too new".

“We originally gave Brothers Cement an orange color that they couldn't match exactly, but we ended up with that beautiful yellow color, so we were happy,” Barker says.

Concealed storage along the walls of the interior corridors maximize space and help maintain a clutter-free look.

Placing seating in a hallway or corridor might sound counterintuitive. However, adding seating— in particular a piece that takes advantage of the length and narrowness of a hallway, like a bench—is particularly well-suited because it works as a waiting nook.

All the lighting is custom made and dimmable.

Before the revamp, the original floors were painted gray. This gave the interiors a dark and tired look, so Taeyman opted for bright white instead.

Architect Caroline Wilding, then of Denver-based Design Platform, led the renovation. The staircase needed some treads replaced, but “was left as original as possible,” she says.
