Cutting-Edge Design Made Possible by 3-D Printing

3-D printing is shaping an entire generation's approach to design. Drawing on their backgrounds in digital modeling, architects Alvin Huang and Jenny Wu will address the medium's potential and pitfalls at Dwell on Design in Los Angeles on May 29. In preparation, we've gathered seven modern 3-D printed designs, including work by Huang and Wu.

The Dazzle Lamp is a project between Belgian designer Corneel Cannaerts and Berlin startup LimeMakers. Cannaerts describes the piece as "a design experiment exploring the intersection of creative coding and digital fabrication." Using a specially developed algorithm, LimeMakers takes photographs, deconstructs them, and then applies portions to triangular facets on the lightshade to produce the color.
