Propeller Island Hotel, Berlin: In 1997, musician Lars Storschen started renting out rooms in his house to supplement his income. Bored with the idea of a traditional guest room, Storschen created different themes for each of the four rooms. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ science fiction novel, Propeller Island, Storschen’s guestrooms-cum art installations, like Symbols (a room filled with 300 symbols) became an extension of his career as an artist. The Sagauro Hotel, Scottsdale, Arizona: This 5.5-acre property is a welcome splash of color in the mundane beiges of the Sonoran desert. Despite breaking out from the shackles of traditional design, Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat of Stamberg Aferiat Architecture still paid homage to the landscape and the Southwest by blending the original buildings' classic "International style" architecture with the invigorating colors of twelve indigenous flowers. Two Los Angeles designers resuscitated a down-at-the-heel John Lautner building, giving architecture fans a chance to spend the night in a mid-century gem. Notice how the designers forewent blinds or curtains on the windows and glazed walls, offering guests sleeping masks instead, to maximize the experience of Lautner’s legendary approach to daylight.
