Textural Bachelor Pad Wrapped in Modern Tile

Rich tiling lends the home tactility throughout. In the kitchen, the Vidals stripped out garish peach-colored tiles from the 1980s and replaced them with a Health tile backsplash. The island pendants are by Rejuvenation.

A husband-and-wife design team revived a 1940s home in East Los Angeles's Mt. Washington area for a single man. Bearing few tell-tale signs of bachelorhood, aside from a photography and music studio in the garage, the renovation retained the home's dual fireplaces and added an array of modern tiles. A transformed modern fireplace surrounded by Japanese tile flanks a custom banquette table in the dining/kitchen area.

The panoply of tile continues in the living room, which is anchored by a second fireplace that Karen wrapped in oval Heath tile. The architects tactically preserved the home’s most worthwhile features and modernized the rest, such as the vinyl windows they replaced with natural milled aluminum.

The predominance of tile ends abruptly in the garage, but texture remains a priority. Lined in warm wood, the space functions as Armario’s photography and music studio.

The master bedroom is accented by a handful of vintage items, including an owl light and record player. Karen re-allocated closet space from the home's two bedrooms to expand the bathrooms.

In one of the home's bathrooms, matching neutral tones prevent the abundance of stone and ceramic from feeling busy.

Meanwhile, the second bathroom is an exercise in contrast. Lighter neutrals are offset by vivid Moroccan cement mosaic floor tile.
