A large glassless opening on the sloping curved shed roof of this Californian home opens the courtyard to the sky and the elements while give the surrounding living areas an almost outdoor, park-like feel.

Catherine's favorite space in the house is this second-floor study by the master suite. "It's a great lounge area with a view of the lake," she says. "Everybody wants to go up there and read a book."

The minimalist fireplace was painted over and reduced in size, then articulated with cantilevered cleft slate hearths on either side. Seating is from the Design Within Reach Raleigh collection.

For a greater sense of flow, the wall that once divided the living room from the dining area was removed and replaced with oak slats. The tongue-and-groove wood on the vaulted ceiling and walls were repainted, while the floors were replaced with wide plank oak harvested and milled locally.

The dining room was opened up to the living room and kitchen for a greater feeling of openness. The dining table set is from the DWR cross collection and is complemented with Tom Dixon pendants to create an intimate feel.

The couple kept the existing bocce court, and added throwback seating to match the midcentury mood.

The second bedroom peaks at seven feet, so even adults can stand straight up in the lofted room. "It’s been really fun for our friends that have kids because they can have their own space," says Lauren. It also doubles as a studio and workspace.

The custom floor is made from maple. As you lift storage hatches and walk through the Airstream, the pieces follow a sea to sun design that designers Schmitt and Jacobs worked with Kyle on.
