The landscape design, by Anna Boeschenstein of Grounded, followed a 2,200-square-foot extension by Formwork architects Robert and Cecilia H. Nichols. The front door is painted in Chinese Red by Sherwin-Williams.
The house has two modules: a living space on the left and a utilities, laundry, and outdoor kitchen on the right.
The back wall of the garden, made from stacked concrete blocks, was initially meant to be a row of vertical planting boxes.
Stepstone's narrow concrete pavers add a graphic touch to the garden.
The deck, fashioned from ipe, was built around one of the property’s many granite outcroppings. An earthen roof was planted with the same varieties of sedum that were added to the front of the cottage.
The exterior is constructed from cypress pine wood and lightweight polycarbonate.
Situated on a gentle slope, the tiny home features a gable roof, a rectangular silhouette, and an expansive wood deck that extends from the front facade.
An energy-efficient TPO membrane covers the living room’s zigzag roof.
The side walls have been treated as vertical extension of the horizontal surface of the garden, and are used for growing climbers such as jasmine, grapes, honeysuckle, raspberries, beans, peas, and even a climbing fig. Colorful bird’s houses and bug hotels are also mounted on the walls.
