In 2014, Jeff and Karen Gunning began researching building another house, hoping to create a single, contained volume without compromising their retirement funds. The resulting Tree House comprises three pitched volumes with cutaways to create a porch in phase one and recessed window planter ledges in phase two. Simple wood columns provide support.

"Deliberate and intentional material placement was imperative to make this high contrast bathroom balanced," said Maggio. "Given that there was not much textural contrast, tile shape helped bring interest to the finishes."

By removing walls and a counter peninsula jutting into the room, interior designer Corine Maggio was able to create enough space for a generous island. The stove wall is a fitting focal point with a hood vent accented in tigerwood and a quartz slab backsplash that helps to tie the space together.

In addition to the master bedroom, there are two guest rooms that are "adequate [in size] but not huge," says homeowner Terry Cruikshank. "We wanted to focus on usable space. When people come to visit, we didn't think they would want to just spend their time in the bedroom."

The owners did not want window treatments that would obscure the views, so motorized privacy shades and insect screens were installed on the exterior. The polished concrete floor slab helps cool the home in the summer and retain heat in the winter.
