After: The soaring new living and dining space benefits from an abundance of natural light from every side, and they spent a lot of time trying to find the best lighting for the kitchen. The custom dining table—which was made by a local artisan—is located in front of west-facing windows that frame the sunset in the evenings. The table can be easily moved inside or out depending on the weather.

Beneath a skylight, a central staircase with a red railing climbs from the ground-level living areas to the more private upper levels, which have pine flooring. “It’s a softwood,” says architect Sébastien Parent, “but as soon as there’s a little scratch, it’s more beautiful.”
Tim Hamilton spruced up the historic house with a matte-black exterior, a snow-white interior, and James Turrell–inspired skylights.
To add balance and interest, the architect contrasted the texture of oak shelving with the sleek finish of glossy white tile in the bathroom.
"Both of the bedrooms are master bedrooms," Petillault says. "The partition wall was an opportunity to do a beautifully colored, space-saving headboard and face the bed toward the window."
The pool's long, rectangular shape mimics the verticality of the main living structure just beyond.
The main living barn opens to a covered outdoor space for eating and lounging, and in the summer, doors and windows can open up completely to blur the line between inside and out. The table is from Kettal and dining chairs are from Tolix.
