Now, an eight-foot sliding door brings light into the kitchen and enables fluid movement between inside and out. The wider steps can serve as seats during a party, and they make for a graceful transition to the yard.
Art of the bath: The new bathroom features a pattern of staggered tiles, inspired by an art installation that wrapped around a corner. “Corners are overlooked—you can use them to emphasize the space,” says Rudabeh.

Yoga Room
The lower-level living area in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights has been transformed into a home gym complete with weights and a stationary bike.
The family wanted an open-plan layout on the first floor so that they could enjoy an indoor/outdoor experience.
The NanaWall door system created another challenge in terms of seismic retrofitting since it created such a large opening. "Meeting current seismic code is a really high bar; you do a lot of work no one sees," says Pond. The Gellermans chose to bring their first and second floors up to seismic code for existing structures.
Now, all of the main living spaces benefit from the expansive glass wall that looks out on the backyard.
IKEA cabinet boxes with wood doors from Semihandmade outfit the kitchen. The bright red uppers are custom-built and have a lacquer finish. "We really try to create a custom look by blending the inexpensive material—the high and the low, if you will," says Reeves. The backsplash is a reflective white glass tile.
Custom cherry cabinetry with integrated handles and sliding doors brings a furniture-like component to the open kitchen. Three 1960s Scandinavian flush mounts by Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker brighten the soapstone counter, while two cognac leather stools by Afteroom for MENU are tucked beneath.

Pellegrino worked closely with the project's cabinetmaker and contractor on the kitchen's custom birch plywood cabinetry. She designed the floating and cantilevered shelves, for which the support of the plywood walls was essential.
