The angle of the custom range hood creates, in negative space, the same trapezoidal shape as the exterior. Cabinets are IKEA with custom-painted fronts.
T+E+A+M completed Northwood ADU in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in late summer 2021.
The bright orange tone of the front door matches the color of the accent wall in the living room, connecting the exterior and the interior of the ADU.
When the Ferguson Sauder family—parents Meg, a school counselor, and Tim, a design instructor, plus kids Cole, Olive, and Asher—wanted a multifunctional backyard addition, they decided to build it themselves. Two Liftoff chairs by Tim Miller, one of Tim’s former students, surround an oil-drum fire pit set in granite dug up on the property. On the deck, the Panamericana chair is by Industry of All Nations.
“I wanted something bold and fresh,” Augustin says of the unit’s citrus-inspired front door, painted Tangerine Dream by Dunn Edwards. The door is flanked by horizontal Redwood slats and gray acrylic stucco.

A recessed entry lined with cedar
The dining room features 1970s leather-and-brass dining chairs and a table concocted from a brass-and-silver base and a custom lacquered top. The cheerful blue paint enlivening the doorway is from Emery & Cie.

The elegantly simple home incorporates passive heating and cooling strategies, such as operable skylights that create a kind of "heat chimney."
When the homeowners were looking for a Ligne Roset Togo Sofa on Craigslist, they happened upon a TOGO display sandwich. Isaac—the founder of design studio Project Room—had the idea to turn it into a light.
Guests were eager to document the lacquered plywood that envelops the main floor.

Warwas offset the rear of the ADU to accommodate the power lines running behind the house, and he designed a window in the office/guest room upstairs that meets the roof in the same way that the window off the dining area/kitchen meets the ground.
Andersen 400 Series casement windows and hinged patio doors were selected for their energy efficiency and aesthetic compatibility with the ranch-style main house.
In San Francisco’s sunny East Bay, the ADU is surrounded by a mature garden with avocado trees and berries. The new shed roof is framed with structurally laminated beams, which allows an open 20-foot span at the interior.
The studio comprises two equally sized spaces—one for Miriam and one for Simon—connected by double doors. The in-between space acts as storage, a small kitchenette, and Miriam’s dark room. Each studio space has been designed to meet the specific needs of the artist. Miriam’s space, for example, is punctuated by an enormous round window that allows her to draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape, while the walls in Simon’s space are dedicated to timber and tool storage.

“My studio space is so glorious,” says artist and homeowner Miriam Nabarro. “The round window is a kind of thought space where ideas are born, and pocket doors open out to the verandah so I can work both inside and outside. It’s a very flexible space.”
The extension wraps around the brick walls of the original home. It features large glazed doors that slide open to the verandah for seamless indoor-outdoor living when the weather allows. The dining table has been in Miriam's family for several generations, and is paired with some “very battered” midcentury Magistretti chairs.
Family members have their own areas in the mudroom. Each is equipped with a hanging basket and a repurposed teak shower mat.
Emily designed the floating vanity and had it painted in Benjamin Moore 'Baked Terra Cotta,' with a Duravit sink top.

The white oak cabinetry has fronts painted in 'Weekend Getaway' by Benjamin Moore. Cabinets were designed by Emily Kopp and fabricated by JV The New Carpentry.
Emily purchased the used Brizo Odin faucet in chrome on Offer Up, and a new Brizo Odin beverage faucet to match. The sconce above the window is vintage and the counters are honed Basaltina ($2,934.38).
Emily detailed the kitchen to have more storage than before, thanks to custom cabinetry she designed, and which was fabricated and installed by J.V. The New Carpentry. The backsplash tile is 2x6 Zia Tile in 'Burnt Sugar.' The stove is a Thor electric range and the refrigerator an iio Retro Mod Fridge RM1, both part of the $4215 the couple spent on appliances.

The girls’ bathroom features Concrete Collaborative Alabaster Large Pink Chip Terrazzo tile in a 12’ X 12” the floors. This is paired with Concrete Collaborative Strands tiles in the Pink Racing Stripe pattern on the shower walls.
The guest bathroom features a bold shower clad in the Strands x Dwell collection tiles in the Tails patterns. The color is inlaid into each concrete tile using pigmented cement—rather than glaze—a traditional process known as “encaustic” that creates a highly durable finish suitable for high-traffic zones. The floors are the Venice Quietude XSMC Tiles.
