“The things we splurged on still look raw, which is what we wanted,” adds Nick.

The space is now defined by a contrasting coat of Benjamin Moore Witching Hour. The cozy niche contains a vintage Overman loveseat and Pholc wall sconce.

The stairs are hidden behind a core wood block with a high gloss finish for a mirror-like reflection. Fortuitously, there is a window at the top of each run. "They're not perfectly aligned, but they bring light down at every level,

After the home was assembled, a local contractor built the outdoor concrete patio and barbecue on site.

A centuries-old blue oak stands near the intersection of the two wings of the house, which is clad in Alaskan yellow cedar. “We decided to split the house into two volumes to let in light and allow us to be more nimble with where we placed the structures.” Jess Field, the architect.

The architects used cedar slats to enclose a steel-and-concrete staircase that leads to the master bedroom upstairs.

A timber-lined study on the upper floor of the parents' suite overlooks a private outdoor courtyard open to the sky and tree canopy.

The stair treads are pine, lined with matching pine slats that Nicole lacquered herself. A matching built-in bench sits by the front door, topped with a custom leather cushion.

"It’s a total smorgasbord of stuff," says Nicole of the home’s furnishings. The angular ceiling light was snagged from Blair’s old office, the sofa was bought off the home’s original owner, and the rugs are from a friend who runs an online shop specializing in vintage carpeting: @shopmienshop on Instagram.

The kitchen island countertop is a budget-friendly quartz composite wrapped around a slab of wood to give it a grand, substantial feeling: Four stools can fit around it for additional seating.

Windows in the roof monitor let in natural light and ventilation.

A grille of walnut slats, designed by Syme and made by the local millworkers MCM, delineates the edge of a new stair with open treads made of hot-rolled steel. Tall Bulthaup cabinets mark the edge of the dining area; Evans, a mechanical engineer, had them custom-made to conceal heating ducts that vent almost invisibly through the top edge.

The extension’s lower level flows uninterrupted from the garden to the kitchen. Storage units hidden under the staircase give the living spaces an uncluttered feel. A Skygarden pendant by Marcel Wanders hangs over Snow 300 dining chairs by James Richardson, providing light in those rare hours when sunlight isn’t streaming in.

The stair, an architectural piece in itself, composed of glass balustrades and open risers, allows light to fall further into the interior.

Stained white-oak flooring was used throughout the interior, which help to bring the natural siding from the outdoors in.

The kitchen wraps around the atrium-like courtyard. Clerestory windows and a continuous row of cabinetry provides strong horizontal elements to connect the kitchen and dining room.

The long row of cabinetry provides additional storage in the dining room, which also features sliding glass doors with access to the rear yard.

Sub Zero refrigerator, and a Wolf gas range

The lower level flows together as a single open space connected by wide-plank white oak flooring and a glazed facade. A large living area is warmed by natural light on both sides.

Inside, the home takes on a Zen-like, minimalist aesthetic. A walk from the front yard and underneath the vertical slats reveals a hidden entry courtyard and a heavily glazed interior.

Careful detailing of the slatted screen showcases the intricate way its walnut and metal components are artfully woven together.

Solid walnut slabs were used for the interior stair treads—a beautiful and durable choice. Sunlight from a skylight above filters through the space, creating delicate patterns of light and shadow as it passes through the screen.

The reimagined entry stair favors rich and warm walnut hues, leading visitors to the relocated third-floor kitchen.

In the bath, a portrait of English actor Joseph Fiennes by Herb Ritts hangs atop existing Cole & Son "Nuvolette" wallpaper by Piero Fornasetti, and the Gabriel Scott sconce relates to the chandelier in the dining room. O'Donnell added crown molding and designed a new vanity in the same style as the media console and new kitchen cabinet doors.
