The spaces are all under 400 square feet. "Each space has a lounge area and a work area so you can choose to chill or work," Rizzi says. "They all come fully loaded with free wifi, a selection of curated books and quarterlies, a yoga mat, and a jar of Tootsie Rolls." Above, a location in New York's Flatiron district features a sofa by A&G Merch, a lounge chair by Gus Modern, and a West Elm desk surrounded by Modernica chairs.
Continuity of exterior and interior materials can be seen in the living room, which is framed by the same Prorez cedar siding as outside. It complements a wood fireplace by Stûv, which is finished with bamboo verde stone and Montauk grey slate.
The main living spaces are designed for comfort: Dave and Maria love to host and, in the future, they may spend more time lounging at home. Rich walnut floors, seen here, run throughout the home. Much of the furniture, such as this green accent chair, were collected by Dave and Maria over the years.
In the living room, the architects painted the limestone fireplace a dark shade of blue-green. The walnut coffee table is by Noguchi for Herman Miller. The Barcelona chair is by Mies van der Rohe.
Lassen says the biggest key for designing a small space is to keep things as minimalist as possible. “Don’t try to make anything bigger or build an addition. Just remove all bad architecture and create clean, simple rooms.”
The picture wall is adorned with images collected from family, colleagues, and estate sales. ”I kill plants, so cacti are our friends,” Peter says of the succulents along the low table behind the Design Within Reach sofa, just over which an Established & Sons Font clock keeps time.
