Azad tends to the garden. The landscaping for each home cost less than $2,500. “We covered the grounds with gravel and cut out abstract forms, which we then planted with succulents,” says Lehrer’s Nerin Kadribegovic.
Designed to disappear from the street, the single-story white stucco home is only 12.5 feet tall to avoid disrupting the neighbors’ views. "Its strong horizontal form was designed as a datum for highlighting the dramatic shapes of the desert landscape," note the architects.
De Poorter lowered the living room floor by about three feet to allow for larger windows. Vintage Sade sofas, purchased in Berlin, join an Arco lamp by Achille Castiglioni for Flos, a Noguchi coffee table, and a painting by family friend Hugo de Clercq.
Natalie loved the original painted metal kitchen cabinets, elevating them with gray leather drawer pulls. She also removed the upper cabinets from the wall and added a patterned tile backsplash that extends to the ceiling. The kitchen island was removed, making room for a dining room table, and the ceiling light was replaced with an Orikata Saucer pendant light from Room & Board.
