As part of the built-in cabinetry beneath the stairs, Wilson included a pull-out bed that can be used by overnight guests.
The kitchen is located in a bespoke timber joinery unit that divides the “living shed.” The timber has been stained black to contrast with the surrounding timber cladding, and brass counters and backsplashes echo the use of brass details throughout the interior. “Brass was a very special material—used sparingly—that has come to be a hallmark of the project,” says architect Ben Shields.

Inside, a sunken concrete tub faces a plywood and fiberboard vanity designed by the couple. The sinks are by Domus and the faucets are by Glacier Bay.
The ceiling is exposed corrugated metal salvaged from the old house’s pitched roof and reused as decking for the concrete slab overhead. The space also features a Jessie Velvet armchair from Altea Design, a Dune pouf by Kare Design, and a Quinn wool rug from Crate & Barrel. Outside, a hammock beckons.
Volt 678 bar stools by Pedrali line the island. The floors throughout are hand-troweled concrete.
The decor is a balance of custom fabrications and vintage finds from all over the world. The living room features a custom-made sofa, daybed, and coffee table paired with vintage midcentury Danish chairs and an antique rug. "The chairs have interesting details from all angles," says Haines. "Everything needed to look good from every angle."

This prefab house is built around a system of 4' by 4' concrete modules and a reusable formwork to save on costs and materials.

Fisher characterizes the house as having an “understated niceness” to it. “The clients wanted everything nice, but not precious,” Fisher says. “A comfortable and functional home that has hints of fun and colorful interjections—just like them.” Here, a painted wall with decals purchased on Etsy, Restoration Hardware’s Devyn Daybed, a Flokati rug from gilt.com, and custom drapery by Workroom Couture Home mix with a toy piano that’s been in the family for years.
The outdoor shower situated off of the master bedroom is enclosed to offer privacy and features a courtyard garden. Michael Arp of Lanoha Nurseries designed the house's landscaping.
Children's Study
With exposed industrial materials for finishes, the interior includes hand-troweled, waxed concrete floors, Douglas fir beams, and sealed-plywood ceilings.
On the house’s lower level, Schicketanz’s guests have a bathroom complete with a steam shower to themselves. Anodized aluminum windows pop against white subway tile from Waterworks. The vanity is from Ikea and the fixtures from Hansgrohe.
“When I come home, this is like a sanctuary. I open up the doors and sit outside and read, or work around the house,” says resident Colleen Nusinow.
Lisette requested the central work island, which cantilevers over the pool.
A central wood-burning fireplace efficiently heats the whole home, minimizing the need for supplemental in-floor heating incorporated in the concrete floors. Natural cross-ventilation is achieved through the use of CO2 directed grills at the north and south of the home, an added green feature that further reduces the ecological footprint.
Bespoke oak cabinetry, produced by an on-site joinery workshop, conceals storage in the living room. A curved ceiling softens the space.
An Agape Spoon bathtub by Benedini Associati provides a sculptural focus in the master bathroom, which has sliding glass doors that open to a private garden area.
Cost-effective hot-rolled steel—steel being an Olson Kunding signature—covers the treads on the staircase leading to the sleeping loft.
