Designed by the original owner, the cabin was imagined as a retreat for her and her siblings' young families.
The couple’s architect, Dan Kaplan of Bowerbird Architects, envisioned a modern addition in this corner of the building that is clad in standing seam metal, to house the two new bathrooms and preserve the original architecture.

The pine ceiling and oak cabinetry are complimentary, and the dark backsplash and countertops are a practical choice that grounds the space. "I love cooking," says Jonah, noting that they chose top-tier appliances from Wolf and Sub-Zero. "I wanted to have a kitchen that could be a central gathering point of our home for years to come where our family could gather to cook together and eat together."
A bright reading nook captures the home's color and material palette: polished concrete floors, white walls, and oak cabinetry. The windows in the reading nook (and also the kitchen and the master bathroom) are a more expensive, frameless model.

The kitchen is customized for Roberta, an avid cook. Easy-to-reach pots hang from a custom rack by Bjørn Design. Its hooks can be lengthened if she has to reach from a wheelchair someday; a lowered counter where she likes to work, read, and play cards can accommodate a wheelchair, should she need one. Oak veneers for the ceilings, floors, and cabinetry were a splurge, but Roberta loves their warmth and texture.
A vintage Molded Plywood Lounge Chair (LCW) by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller sits in front of built-in shelving in untreated hemlock.
In true mid-century fashion, a George Nelson Bubble Lamp is paired with an Eames Lounge by Charles and Ray Eames in a corner of the living room. The glass walls and mitered corner are original features of architect Saul Zaik’s 1956 design.

Timber battens were used on north-facing windows to prevent excessive heat in the summer. The exterior is clad in Scyon’s Linea weatherboard and covered in Dylux’s Western Myall paint. Beneath the upper floor, a little nook makes for the perfect covered carport and storage spot for surfboards.
The roof garden adds another area for gathering to the home, allowing the residents to enjoy views of Johannesburg while appreciating the nature around them. One of the clients, Toni, sits on the roof every afternoon with a cup of tea.
Kelli embraced simple raw materials like marine-grade plywood and let them shine. “I made a design rule for myself for this project: no material should imitate another material. If it’s plywood, let it look like plywood. Let’s celebrate that.”
The guesthouse is clad in vertical white vinyl siding. Kelli had decking constructed out of engineered wood and cedar.
