Large windows and a white bedspread lend an airy atmosphere to a California bedroom in the first home Geremia designed from the group up.
Since there is no running water, the architects installed a composting, vacuum toilet by JETS that filters the wastewater in special drainage ducts. The bathroom basin is by Duravit and the cabinets are custom.
The second bedroom upstairs also offers an en-suite bathroom.
After a top-down renovation, the revamped midcentury at 4311 Noeline Avenue blends together a glass, wood, and stone facade. A gently sloping roof line defines much of the interior.
A window in the garden-level master bedroom was enlarged, increasing the amount of natural light that enters the room. The built-in closets feature IKEA PAX components with custom fronts in matte white to match the walls.

The crumbling stone walls of a 17th-century farmhouse in the remote countryside of Dumfries, Scotland, presented a unique renovation opportunity for Lily Jencks Studio and Nathanael Dorent Architecture, the teams behind this project. Rather than demolish the old walls, they inserted a crisp, modern home within them, so as to emphasize the site's history and passage of time.

Two hours north of New York City, an unusual barn emerges from a hill just off a country road. Its black siding and bright-red window frames hint at the imaginative playground inside. This space, with its rope-railed catwalk and indoor tent, is just one element of the multifaceted getaway architecture and design firm BarlisWedlick Architects designed for fund manager Ian Hague.
Once the awkward back staircase was removed, the designers made way for a new family room downstairs.
Measuring 785 square feet, this once-neglected cottage was recently brought back to life by a local couple. The duo, who own a furniture and design shop in the nearby city of Ferndale, added charming and functional detailing to the tiny home, including a cozy sitting area on the front porch.
A new soaking pool has been added to the interior entry court.
The mahogany-wrapped, load-bearing element was removed to create a greater sense of flow between the kitchen, dining area, and living room. The new flooring throughout is cork tile.
Remotely operable clerestory windows under the raised roof allow more natural light and airflow. A new fireplace and shelving were also added; the central hearth mimics the design of the cantilevered front balcony. The original midcentury Herman Miller sofa and coffee table were given to the new owners and reupholstered.

The team removed the wall between the kitchen and living room, then increased the kitchen’s size by 30 square feet through extending the wall of cabinets towards the dining room and adding an island. The distinctive stools are Phase Design’s Bride’s Veil Bar & Counter Stool.
For this Eichler remodel, the objective was to respect the original bones with more thoughtful updates than what had come before. "Our goal was to design a beautiful mix of finishes that respected the timeless design intention of Eichler homes," say Sommer and Costello. "Rather than focus purely on historical renovation, we wanted to update the finishes and layout to ensure it lives on for the next generation."
To make sure that the kitchen would be flooded with natural light, a skylight was inserted. "Ellen Wu, the project lead, came up with a fun detail: We exposed the roof framing to keep a wood element in the ceiling," explains Boyer. The backsplash tiles are the Dwell Pattern Little Diamond Mix from Heath Ceramics.
The bar area is set off to the side but still a part of the kitchen. "When I entertain, it’s so great because I can set up glasses and booze by the bar so that my guests can easily help themselves without disrupting anything that is going on over by the stove," Andrea adds.
The grand parlor with a custom-designed bar is located on the ground floor, right next to a large terrace with a corner view of the San Francisco Bay.
Casa Serpiente, or "Snake House" in Lima, Peru, is named after the building's twisting form that meanders around 25 trees. As the second-largest desert city in the world, it almost never rains in the area, making trees precious. The home has plenty of open space and light, while an occasional trunk pokes through the house.
To combat the environmental impact of a shortage of green spaces in Ho Chi Minh City, local firm VTN Architecture designs homes with lush interiors. Stepping Park House exudes a greenhouse vibe with a plethora of trees and foliage spanning all three levels of the 5,081-square-foot abode.
Inspired by the Sydney Opera House, architects Andrew Maynard and Mark Austin paid careful attention to the extension’s “fifth elevation"—the way it’s seen from the sky.
