Between Sets

This artfully minimalist Australian kitchen combines concrete, oak, steel, and prefabricated panels with a substantial marble countertop and backsplash.

Concreteworks countertops, a Wolf range, Kallista sink, and Boffi faucet also fill the space.

"Around the time we were thinking of moving back [to San Francisco], I took a trip to Marfa, Texas, and fell in love with the agelessness of Donald Judd’s work," says Amy. "I liked the idea of having a classic American reference to the space, since we are influenced as much from America as we are by Asian culture."

Hatchet Design Build took a contemporary approach with this kitchen while still drawing from the a traditional palette. The grain-matched walnut cabinets echo the walnut pocket doors elsewhere.

At night, the large window in the dining area creates a lantern-like effect for the cabin.

The wood headboard in the main bedroom features a built-in storage nook.

A deep window frame in the living space doubles as a sitting area and harnesses views of the garden and the village church.

The blackened timber–clad cabin that arba designed in Longueil, Normandy, France, is marked by large glass doors, layered with wood slats that slide open and connect the home to its lush landscape.

With its emphasis on the outdoors, the petite shelter in Normandy offers room to roam.

An expansive wood deck on the front facade extends the living space and creates an indoor/outdoor experience.
