The overhanging roof creates covered outdoor space connected to the home's public areas.

Clerestory windows in Tyler's design studio provide plenty of light, while built-in bookshelves and flat files offer ample storage.

Tucked away on a wooded property in Greenwich, Connecticut, the cantileverd writer’s retreat holds over 1,700 poetry volumes.
Reilly, pictured here, deleted the original front door in order to create an expanse of uninterrupted wall in the living room. The existing slider is now the main entry point. She clad the exterior with planks marketed as a shou sugi ban product that reads as burned, knotty cedar. A new, corrugated metal roof replaced asphalt shingles.
Glass sliders running the length of the interior can close off the living space, or retract for a wide-open connection to the dining area, patio, and pool.
“Zarzales is a vacation home located in Valle de Bravo, whose architecture, simple and pure, gives the prominence it deserves tothe surrounding nature,” says the firm.
The exterior is clad in corrugated, galvanized metal. “We just spray it off with a water house,” says Mark.
While they may resemble shipping containers, the pods are actually built of wood and clad in corrugated steel.
In the main living spaces, Montgomery exposed the Douglas fir LVLs, which are structural support beams that span the entire ceiling and don’t necessitate support columns.
The primary bathroom has Regoli Collection tile from Ames Tile and a Corian vanity counter.
The metal mesh casts interesting shadows and allows sightlines to the front yard from the hall.
The middle floor hallway has terrazzo flooring and Douglas fir at the ceiling.
The large kitchen island and perimeter counter is covered in Lido Quartz. “We just wanted a big entertaining space, with a big kitchen, for everyone to enjoy, and not to be used by just us,” says Monika.
The storage extends to the wall, and an office space is tucked on the other side of the staircase. No baseboard or trim underscores “where materials come together and form a reveal between them, rather than having an additive baseboard,” says Montgomery. “It’s about a reduction and elimination to try to create a cleaner visual for your eye.”
Montgomery designed a custom shelf for the couple’s vinyl collection. The green sofas are the Camaleonda by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia. The bent aluminum side tables are the Facsimile Table by Yusho Nishioka.
The mesh continues around the exterior balcony. In the dining room, the table and chairs are by Gazzda.
Dozens of slender steel rods, installed at arbitrary points, echo the grove of birch trees that sits behind the home.
In the dining room, Guillerme et Chambron armchairs from Maison Gerard surround a CB2 table. The ceiling light is by Lambert & Fils. In the kitchen, rich blue cabinetry with wood details from GD Arredamenti is topped with a Caesarstone “Aire Concrete” counter. The gold artwork is by Joyce Billet.
“Those living rooms are always a challenge in brownstones, to furnish in a thoughtful way,” says Cuttle, pointing to the narrow dimensions of the room, the low window sills, and abundance of woodwork taking up wall space. A curving Carl Hansen sofa floats in front of the bay window, so as not to block the light and allowing easy sightlines. The chairs and coffee table are from Lawson Fenning and the rug is Jardan.
The detached building, perfect for dinner parties or events, is appropriately dubbed the MacBarn.
“Off the kitchen is the 1,000-square-foot great room with an oversize woodburning fireplace, original wide-plank floors, custom wainscoting milled from trees on the property, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the creek and waterfall,” says the listing agent.
The addition’s pitched roofline matches the form of the original 1820s farmhouse.
Designer Tom Givone transformed a 19th-century homestead in Eldred, New York, into his peaceful weekend retreat, dubbed the Floating Farmhouse. During the renovation, Givone added a new wing to the original gabled structure, finished with a 22-foot-tall wall of glass.
"The greenhouse is supplied with heat & internet and is a spectacular setting for outdoor dinners. There has been substantial investment in the infrastructure including radiant heat, electric heat pumps for heating and cooling, full house generator, hardwired speakers & smart home automation."
The dining room features double height ceilings and accompanying double height floor-to-ceiling window.
The wall holding the fireplace separates the kitchen from the living room (featuring pup Major). "It's nice to have some separation," says Weber. "In small-space design, you get more for your money by having different experiences, not just one room."
Drapes by Cush Cush Design offer privacy in the master bedroom. An Andy Moses painting hangs above the bed.
The bathroom is covered in Heath tile and indigo Eskayel wallpaper. The Ghost chair is by Philippe Starck.
Chris, a retired commodities derivatives trader, served as the general contractor, with guidance from builder Mike Paulsen. Decorum Arch Stone fabricated the waterfall countertop made of Colorado Gold marble; Scott Cabinets did the millwork. The cooking range is by Wolf. Trove wallpaper accents the far wall of the powder room at the end of the corridor.
