Making the first floor’s envelope slightly narrower than the top one’s saved money while minimizing the amount of excavation required.

Set amongst the trees, with its simple form and earthy adherence to wood, the home fits in well. "Veronica and I walked the land for many months before we decided where to put the house," says Hirsh. The house incorporates a variety of wood finishes, all in the same general color palette: unfinished ipe for the pool terrace, Douglas fir for the trellis and windows, and stained cypress for the siding mixed in with the exterior’s original redwood.

Built to stay cozy through all kinds of weather, Micro House has a gray-stained, cedar rain screen in addition Lo-E glass. At a diagonal from the front porch, another subtracted corner makes space for a sleeping loft.
