The operable porthole-style window is an additional source of light and ventilation.

When the Ferguson Sauder family—parents Meg, a school counselor, and Tim, a design instructor, plus kids Cole, Olive, and Asher—wanted a multifunctional backyard addition, they decided to build it themselves. The glass wall can be oriented toward the main house to create a connection or toward a corner of the property to create private outdoor space.

“We didn't want a piece of willful sculpture for your backyard,” says Hanley. “The gable looks just as good behind a mission revival house as it does behind something daring and contemporary.”
Windows on all side and sight lines clear through the structure give the Dwell House a sense of expansiveness and transparency.
