Designed by Frederick Liebhardt, the recently renovated San Diego home captures seaside vistas in almost every room.

“I envision people writing their books, music, refuelling their creative flow,” says Castillero. He should know about its energizing power more than anyone, really: it brought him back to his love of architecture, after all. “It’s truly my new happy place.”
Designed by Hamish McIntyre and renovated by Russell Hollingsworth, the carefully preserved home has three patios, two decks, and sea vistas in nearly every room.
Intrigued by the "smart, simple things" being done with modular housing, Will Arnett tapped architect Suchi Reddy and prefab company LivingHomes to design a house that merges the best of on-site and factory construction. The "Arrested Development" and "LEGO Movie" actor’s new home, completed in 2017, faces down a verdant canyon in Beverly Hills.
The original layout was very much of the time: a perfect midcentury modern flow, with a closed-off kitchen and a fire put in the floor. “They were cool but impractical spaces,” says Schaer.

At Las Rocas, you always have two views: the lake and the rocks, which was the impetus for erasing the corners of the home. “The corner openings were a must for this project, because they really connect you to the outside,” says architect Ignacio Urquiza.
The renovation introduced additional steel beams to reinforce the “sagging cantilevered roof.” The team also added insulation, rebuilt the chimney/parapet, and supplemented roof shingles with ones that were consistent with the originals.
The muted grey coloured ceramic cladding enjoys a quiet synergy with its surroundings as it mirrors the silvery bark of the bare trees in winter.

According to Daniela, a simple material palette was important. "The kids are coming and going all the time," she says, so all bedrooms are made up with the same linens, "much like a hotel."
Surrounded by forest and accessed via a fairy-tale bridge, the resilient forever home showcases the strength of cross-laminated timber.

The couple originally installed a spinning chimney cap, but thanks to faulty manufacturing, it squeaked as it rotated. “But of course it would squeak down the chimney into what is essentially a trumpet,” says Peter. “We had to get a crane in and get into a basket to get the thing off.”
A centuries-old blue oak stands near the intersection of the two wings of the house, which is clad in Alaskan yellow cedar. “We decided to split the house into two volumes to let in light and allow us to be more nimble with where we placed the structures.” Jess Field, the architect.
Bathroom tiles continue the visual theme of warm terra-cotta-like tones, embellished by gold-finished faucets.
Surrounded by 500 hectares of natural lava fields in Hella, Iceland, this glass cottage—with an open-air hot tub on the deck—immerses guests in Iceland’s spectacular landscape. Enjoy endless sunsets and sunrises from the comfy bed in the summer, and the opportunity to drift off to sleep beneath the Northern Lights and one of the world’s most impressive starscapes in the winter. The interior is designed to complement the surrounding landscape—think furniture crafted from driftwood collected from the beaches of ísafjörður, cushions and a headboard hand-knitted with naturally dyed yarn from a rescue sheep farm, and artworks made from living Icelandic moss.
An Englander wood-burning stove warms the living room, and the two round windows were inspired by architect Paolo Soleri’s Arcosanti, which the couple visited on a cross-country van trip.
The suburban backyard garage in Hertfordshire, England, that architect Olli Andrew of Hyper converted into a work studio is wrapped in charred larch wood pieces that give the impression of scales and foster biodiversity, providing a place for insects to nestle.
