Downstairs, the bathroom is less colorful, embracing texture and material to achieve its calming, minimal vibe. Here, a custom oak vanity anchors the space. The curve of the Rejuvenation mirror nods to the arch of the Kohler faucet. A Caesarstone quartz countertop and Daltile wall tiles round out the room, while Scout Regalia’s SR wall hooks provide a pop of color.
From the outside, the Van de Velde sisters’ apartments in Ghent appear seamless, contained within a new mixed-use building inspired by the work of Robert Mallet-Stevens and designed by Lien Van de Velde’s partner, Jeremy Godenir. But inside, it’s a different story: Each apartment reflects the style of its residents. “The true visionary was my mother, who bought the industrial building” that was on the site before, Lien explains. Though her mother wasn’t a designer, she could tell the property was ripe for reinvention. “The only one who was interested was me, the crazy architect,” says Jeremy, who based his studio on the ground floor. When he and Barbara’s partner, Karel, mentioned to their in-laws that the site would be a lovely place to live, the wheels started to turn.
The green roof’s dramatic slope is supported by a mesh-and-soil planting system by SOPREMA. Landscape architect Marie-Ève Parent of Lemay did the landscape design. The original house is visible beyond.

Local artist John Bisbee created a decorative screen out of nails for the end of the base cabinet. Stuart built the drawers using traditional wood-on-wood slides and proportionally spaced dovetails, which operate differently in summer and winter. “Those idiosyncrasies effect the way you interact with it,” Stuart notes. “The kitchen is experiential in that way.”
The brick wall was intended to introduce an element of warmth into the living room.
The use of brick in the apartment was inspired by the external facade of the block.
External staircases inspired the graphic design of the bespoke floor tiles.
The original mosaic tiles in the balcony were retained and serves as an important design inspiration for the rest of the apartment.
The decision to have a patterned brick lay was a decision made on site.
Ramos added a clever space-saving cooktop with peninsula bench for additional seating.
The new floor plan allows for direct flow between the kitchen and dining area.
Out of the Valley designs and manufactures freestanding, outdoor saunas that are separate from the main house. “You can have these spaces in the garden in either rural or urban spaces, or in a woodland so you can walk out to it as part of the experience,” says McKelvie. “Cold water swimming is becoming much more popular and many of our clients want waterside saunas to take that experience to the next level.” The Quarry Sauna is a bespoke sauna built on the shores of a lake.
