The clients' request for a more flexible space that could accommodate guests and a home office was met by removing the wall and building closets in each corner. The original space featured a sloped ceiling, which was preserved, while two custom day beds make room for a centered desk and chair.
Two hours north of New York City, an unusual barn emerges from a hill just off a country road. Its black siding and bright-red window frames hint at the imaginative playground inside. This space, with its rope-railed catwalk and indoor tent, is just one element of the multifaceted getaway architecture and design firm BarlisWedlick Architects designed for fund manager Ian Hague.
The steel-frame structure makes this prefab durable for all weather.

The multicolored cushions were designed by Acuña and fabricated by Viviana Cortes.
The landscape design, by Anna Boeschenstein of Grounded, followed a 2,200-square-foot extension by Formwork architects Robert and Cecilia H. Nichols. The front door is painted in Chinese Red by Sherwin-Williams.
Spear custom-designed a steel frame for the chassis that could accommodate large-capacity fresh- and gray-water tanks.
The first floor is constructed primarily from sawara cypress, a species of wood native to central Japan this is cultivated for its high-quality timber.
The upstairs living area has high ceilings, and the original structural beams were exposed and preserved. “The log beams were intact and were in surprisingly great condition,” says Hirakawa. “This was one of the reasons why we did not want to scrap the entire building.” The pendant is from 24d-Studio’s lighting collection.
An oversized sectional in the living room provides the perfect place for the whole family to kick back during movie nights. “The clients fought to have a big Italian couch,” Ashizawa laughs. “I told them, ‘okay, but I get to choose the color.’” The soothing grey Minotti was the compromise.
From the entrance, a slender metal staircase leads to the upper-level kitchen and dining area.
The hinoki is left in its natural state save for a transparent natural wax seal that allows the wood’s natural fragrance to come through. The floors, ceilings, and walls are all built of hinoki, including the handrails and the slatted doors.
A traditional tatami room with shoji sliding doors is located next to the open-plan living space.
The Japanese bathroom has an onset, which looks out to greenery framed by timber portals.
Plywood is used to form internal partitions, while Hokkaido Cedar defines short planes.
A solar array (on the left-hand side of the photo) powers the lights and outlets (and laptops) during the day.
