Reilly, pictured here, deleted the original front door in order to create an expanse of uninterrupted wall in the living room. The existing slider is now the main entry point. She clad the exterior with planks marketed as a shou sugi ban product that reads as burned, knotty cedar. A new, corrugated metal roof replaced asphalt shingles.
The Charlotte Perriand cylindrical wall sconces by Nemo in the primary bedroom were a key element from the start. Reilly designed the white oak plywood side tables. The Moroccan horsehair rug has a speckled effect with neutral stripes.
Reilly identified the Santa & Cole Tekiò linear suspension light as a statement piece early in the design process; its metal frame is wrapped in Japanese washi paper. The Gaggenau induction cooktop integrated into the counter on the back wall is nearly invisible. The undercounter fridge drawer is entirely inconspicuous. “I made this as minimal as modern as I could because the last kitchen I designed was very traditional,” Reilly explains. The steel column was added for support after taking down a wall.
Pretty drinking glasses and such are displayed on the six-inch wide shelf above the sink. Reilly was excited to incorporate the Vola faucet she fell for years ago.
The house is essentially an upscale surf shack. The design outdoors facilitates easy showering, clean up, and board storage.
The bathroom's shower is wheelchair accessible, if needed.
The overhead windows cast light and shadows above the kitchen, which is lined in lower drawers for easy access.

The living area opens onto a deck. A set of benches on ground level were built by the couple for their wedding but have been repurposed here as flexible seating.
The workshop interiors emphasize function, with polished concrete slab floors and 35-foot-high ceilings to accommodate large projects and gatherings. The disco ball, set to spin via a smartphone app, can be lowered with an industrial winch and is visible from the overhead studio suite through a peek-a-boo window.
After clearing the site of refuse and its disused, tumbledown structures, Jai and Lindsay erected a steel kit-of-parts framework for the barnlike workshop, which they positioned overlooking the tree line of Douglas firs in the valley below.
Architect Jai Kumaran and his partner, Lindsay Merkle, transformed a badly neglected ridgetop property in Scappoose, Oregon, into a retreat, completing a 3,000-square-foot prefabricated workshop and studio suite as the first phase of a larger planned creative compound where they could live, work, and gather with family and friends.

At the core of the home is a magnificent stone fireplace. The warmth of natural woods line all of the living spaces, and bold art forms rooted in the natural world complement the lodge-like atmosphere of the great room.

The great room wraps frames sweeping views of the open meadow and ocean beyond, while also providing comfortable sitting areas and dining spaces.

The bookcase that separates the communal living space from the bedrooms is made of 12" x 10" x 30" and 60” plywood boxes.

After: A Dewdrops pendant by Italian studio Giopato & Coombes hangs delicately over an oak wood dining table. The Thomas Hayes Studio chairs are wrapped in Moore & Giles hair-on-hide, and underneath a custom, olive wool rug by Kush Rugs echoes the home’s green surroundings.
Maria Bruun’s Mirror Mirror wraps a corner in the powder room, which is covered in Willow Song wallpaper by Zoffany.
Thomas made the sliding door to the bedroom using wood left over from the concrete forms. The uneven edges of the log storage niche celebrate the process and its imperfections.
The ceiling drops down significantly over the built-in bench in the living area to create a cozy nook. “Like the kitchen, it’s a space within a space,” Thomas says. The wooden boards are flush with the window frame, allowing the sun to wash down the wall.
The home sits at the end of a quiet, gravel road just 325-yards from the ocean. A board-formed concrete wall along the entry path hints at what is indoors.
Feldman Architects opened up the living room with a smooth white plaster wall for the fireplace, and a new board-formed concrete hearth. The couch is from Design Within Reach, and the coffee table and side chair are custom.
In the primary suite, a new sliding glass door allows for cross-ventilation. A Noguchi pendant hangs above a bed from Design Within Reach and a custom couch. The rug is from Armadillo.
A new bird's nest office in the loft atop the reoriented stair creates opportunities for views of the golf course in the distance. The desk and bench are custom built-ins, and the chair is from Blu Dot.

The kitchen underwent the most dramatic change, being relocated to the back of the house adjacent to the living room. White Oak floors and casework and new Kolbe windows warm up the space. The pendant light is from Design Within Reach, and the bar stools are custom from Sean Woolsey.
