When the homeowners of this 1960 home in Portland’s Southwest Hills bought the property in 2009, they became the new owners of a lot of white carpeting, tired woodwork, dated wallpaper, and lackluster storage. Over time, they came to wish for a home that better suited their lives, but didn’t want to sacrifice the excellent midcentury bones. A two-pronged renovation became the answer to their problems. For the first phase completed in 2016, Fieldwork Design + Architecture remodeled the main floor. The firm swapped out the white carpeting for warm cork flooring, then strategically inserted variegated cedar planking. Fireplace surrounds received new plaster to bring in a subtle, earthy texture. Sharp black accents, whether via dining chairs or new patio doors, add definition. Fieldwork replaced the trim around the windows with CVG fir and added variegated cedar planking for warmth and texture. For the second phase of the transformation, which wrapped in 2019, Annie Wise of Annie Wise Design stepped in for a gut remodel of the kitchen and master bathroom, with the goal of ensuring any changes remained consistent with what had already been done.
The second-floor “think tank” includes a workspace and the owner’s library.
“The open floor plan flows seamlessly to the updated dining and kitchen areas, and out to the large rear patio,” says the listing agent.
Woodshop 506 did the millwork for the cabinets and shelves throughout the home.

Now, there are sightlines from the entry to the backyard. The dining table, surrounded by Wegner Wishbone chairs, is by Campagna, a Portland-based design studio.
Raised cabinetry on one side of the dining room makes it harder to see the kitchen’s mess. The designers also inserted a mirror panel adjacent to the windows.
This 4,080-square-foot house in Shoreline, Wahington was a former adult living facility, that has since been converted into a single-family home by Seattle firm SHED Architecture & Design. “The wall of glazing facing towards the West is still one of the most striking elements of the house,” says designer Rebecca Marsh, so it was key that any redesign maintain its integrity.

This 195-square-foot, shingled studio includes a library, reading nook, and workstation—and it’s totally DIY. Creative couple Michael and Christina Hara built the retreat just steps away from their back door, in order to carve out "space for creativity and respite from our chaotic, toddler-filled house," as Michael explains. The project, called the Fish Scale Studio, took eight months to complete, with Haras doing all of the design and construction themselves—for just $18,275.
Although the office was kept intentionally neutral, a subtle print is introduced through the wallpaper on one feature wall. “I couldn’t resist adding a wallpaper that I had been wanting to use for quite some time on my own wall — but I kept it black and white,” says Abbie.
Place a cactus or succulent in your bathroom if you want all the benefits of greenery but not much of the work.

The couple designed the oak built-ins to tuck under the existing high windows, making sure the new wood tones meld with the existing wood on the floor and ceiling.
There are decks on all levels of the home. “We utilize them all,” says James. “I use them throughout the day to catch the sun at different times.”
The couple preserved the original fireplace treatment. A B&B Italia sectional sits atop a Ben Selomani rug with Arne Norell chairs. The large-scale artwork is by Christine.
White oak flooring now feels much lighter and brighter.
A Japanese soaking tub is positioned beneath a window to appreciate the site.
Custom cabinetry runs from the closet into the bathroom for a unified feel.
While the majority of the interior products feature neutral colors, the Fox's decorated the rooms with many textured and colorful pieces of furniture such as these yellow Vladimir Kagan chairs.
The workstation and the cabinets are by Korben Mathis Woodworking; the desk lamp is from TaoTronics.
